The Protocols Team:
The Protocols team is a critical part of Core Identity, the engineering organization responsible for the heart of the Auth0 application. Core Identity manages the authentication pipeline, protocols, user sessions, and all foundational elements of our product.
Our mission is to enable Auth0 and its customers to solve identity problems using standards-based solutions. The team owns the core application codebase, including the critical authentication engine. We are home to highly skilled engineers with deep expertise in digital identity and a proven track record of designing robust, scalable systems.
Our work impacts millions of users daily and supports numerous other platform areas. The team operates these critical services at scale and plays a vital role in assisting other Auth0 teams in designing and implementing key product capabilities.
The Role:
This role is ideal for individuals who thrive at the center of action, enjoy mentoring others, and excel at solving complex problems by breaking them down into manageable parts.
Our technology stack primarily includes a NodeJS backend (JavaScript or TypeScript), with data storage using MongoDB, PostgreSQL, and Redis. Our services are hosted on AWS and Azure.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will:
- Gain expertise in identity and security by building innovative features and standards that enhance Auth0’s platform capabilities, helping organizations innovate securely worldwide.
- Improve and refactor code and development processes within Auth0’s core applications, focusing on enabling product teams to accelerate safely.
- Collaborate in a highly cross-functional environment with talented engineers and partners across Product, Security, Design, and QA to deliver customer-centric features.
- Gain exposure to modern cloud technologies and best practices, including AWS, Azure, and distributed systems at scale.
You are a good fit for this role if:
- You have 6+ years of software development experience.
- You have practical experience with Node.js (JavaScript or TypeScript).
- You have experience designing, building, and maintaining APIs or libraries used across teams and by customers, and enjoy improving code for maintainability and developer experience.
- You are passionate about designing, implementing, and troubleshooting highly reliable, maintainable, and scalable distributed systems.
- You write well-tested, high-quality code and are experienced with various testing strategies (unit, integration, end-to-end, performance).
- You have experience working with cloud environments.
- You possess a product-focused mindset, can empathize with customer needs, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional partners.
Bonus points if:
- You have experience in the Identity and Access Management (IAM) domain.
- You have experience working with a fully distributed, remote team.
- You have a strong understanding of security engineering and application security.
