We’re looking for experienced Software Engineers to join our growing team working on delivering expanding Snowflakes’s Geospatial analysis capabilities in Berlin, Germany. The team is responsible for extending spatial features and enhancing query optimization and query execution techniques to further enhance performance.  This role offers a unique opportunity to make a significant impact to Snowflake in a rapidly growing area for location-aware analytic applications.

AS A GEOSPATIAL QUERY PROCESSING ENGINEER AT SNOWFLAKE YOU WILL:

  • Design, develop and extend Snowflake’s geospatial data processing engine using novel and sophisticated new algorithms
  • Analyze and understand performance and scalability bottlenecks in the system and drive resolution of them.
  • Support our customers by pinpointing problems, instrumenting relevant components as needed, and ultimately implementing solutions to the issues identified.
  • Deal with issues from logical representation of the execution plan to efficient resource management, all the way down to highly specialized vectorized execution.
  • Evaluate and determine priorities with a critical understanding of where performance matters while retaining ease-of-use and system reliability

OUR IDEAL GEOSPATIAL QUERY PROCESSING ENGINEER WILL HAVE:

  • 5+ years hands-on software engineering experience.
  • Experience with Geospatial Information Systems and geospatial libraries as well as solutions of common geospatial problems.
  • Background in database internals or building core components for large scale data processing systems (i.e. Hadoop, Spark), especially query execution/processing, and/or optimization.
  • Strong CS fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems.
  • Systems programming skills including multi-threading, concurrency, etc. 
  • Fluency in C++ or C, and Java
  • Extremely strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Outstanding written and oral English language skills
  • BS in Computer Science; Masters or PhD Preferred.


BONUS POINTS FOR THE FOLLOWING:

  • Strong database fundamentals including SQL, performance, multi-threading, and schema design.
  • Experience using big data storage technologies and their applications (HDFS, Cassandra, Columnar Databases, etc.)
  • German language skills
  • Experience reading and integrating data from multiple sources.
